From pixie cuts for girls to long cuts for boys, one Utah mother is getting international recognition for her YouTube videos.
April Orgill, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and mother of four, recognized a need for hair tutorials online and in early 2013 decided she was the one for the job. She teamed up with her husband Davey, a professional videographer, to make this idea turn into something concrete. The duo has now published more than 100 videos with instructions on how to cut, style, and color hair to get a variety of dos.
The couple began “Hair 101 with April,” in January 2013 with their first video explaining and showing how to do a “cute heart hairdo” on girls. Since their first video, Orgill has explained haircutting concepts like how to do basic cuts on men, boys, and girls, how to do a variety of cute hairstyles for girls, fun hairstyles on boys, and how to cut trendy hairstyles on both males and females.
Orgill’s videos have gained attention from people all over the world, getting millions of views from people in countries like Australia, Norway, Germany and even Pakistan. Orgill says that she receives emails from people thanking her for teaching them to cut children’s hair so they could save money on haircuts, and from cosmetology students expressing their excitement for finally passing off a certain concept with the help of her tutorials.
Despite the incredible success her videos have achieved, Orgill explained to KSL,
The most rewarding thing about the channel has not been the number of subscribers. It has been so awesome to get emails from people every day, thanking me for making it simple enough to understand. These are the things that keep me going.
Orgill began cutting hair 12 years ago while studying cosmetology and barbering at Salt Lake Community College.
