The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encourages its members to use their agency. In the case of politics, the importance of agency is even more so encouraged. For this reason, the LDS Church’s stance on political affiliation is one of neutrality and diversity.
Yesterday the Huffington Post wrote about the ‘Mormon Left’ in an effort to reveal how many members of The Church are democrats. A study done by Political Science Professors David E. Campbell (Notre Dame), John C. Green (University of Akron), and J. Quin Monson (Brigham Young University), was cited that explored Mormonism and American Politics. From this study it was concluded that roughly 10% of LDS members are democrats. Huffington concluded that although several notable LDS democrats had made waves this summer, the small minority has their work cut out for them in engaging more members to join their political cause.
LDS Dems, the largest democratic caucus in the state of Utah, is taking to the roads with a new billboard campaign that they hope will send the message that you can be LDS and a Democrat. The billboards will address various topics that are important to all members of the Church, including education and charity.
Members of the LDS Dems group shared with Good4Utah why they are putting up billboards in Salt Lake County and Ogden in the video below.
Although the LDS Democratic group makes up around 10% of the LDS Church, The Huffington Post and other local news organizations are taking notice to their political efforts.
