The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints aided newborn nurses in Sierra Leone by offering trainings on birthing procedures.
Abie and Mohammad Turay have been direct recipients of the humanitarian aid offered to them by the LDS Church. President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency of the Church mentioned Abie’s story in the recent General Conference talk, “Is Not This the Fast That I Have Chosen?”
The Church not only provided the Turay’s with food, hygiene kits, and used clothing during the civil war in Sierra Leon, but the Church also provided Abie Turay, a prenatal nurse, the skills to resuscitate a newborn baby. Every year approximately one million babies die due to breathing difficulties. Turay thanked the Church for the priceless trainings by saying,
We thank the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints. We thank those people who provided [the trainings.] May God bless them, wherever they are.
