Food storage and anti-hoarding laws during "national emergencies"

A member of our Ward sent in a bottle of Water his mother had stored 20 years earlier with a teaspoon of bleach per 2 ltr bottle to the government testing site. It came back with the highest rating they give out!

We have around 200 ltr of water and bleach stored. After 5 years I dump, rinse and refill just to be on the safe side.

But the filter is an excellent idea, I might have the water stored but I can't transport any amount for any real distance. If our home was damaged our water reserve would be gone. The filter is transportable it can go with you.

I am for the filter and will order a few this month for the family. Now to convert ocean water to fresh water is a problem.

What about the air to water convertion generator?

Don't know if it works but I was once told to take two pots with lids. Drill a hole in both lids that fit a flexible connector pipe that can handle heat. Put your salt water in one pot on a heat source so it turns to steam. Steam travels through pipe into second pot that is not on heat so it turns back to water.

Salt stays behind in the first pot. And water is boiled to purify.

The smart things to remember about any kind of emergency planning is there is no one best way for everyone and plan for alternative methods. Storing nothing but cans of soup then your only can opener breaks does not help. or storing those cans then finding you have to flee your home on foot also does little good.

One compromise I use is this.

We can't afford to buy mylar packs of soup as it is not popular in Nova Scotia so everything has to be ordered in and I don't make a huge amount of money. Since we can't be positive of a water source if we have to evac our area the dry stuff is only good so far. What we have is a bag of cans of soup and TWO cheap can openers and resealable plastic bags.

In an emergency we grab our 72 hour kits, and that heavy bag if we can. When we get to a point we can safely take ten minutes we will stop, open all the cans to remove 1/2 the weight and pour the soup into the bags. They will take some abuse without leaking, and even cold provide a source of liquid and food.

Not the best way but a way we can afford and it gives us something.

Don't do what a friend did and boil water then pour it into a plastic jug a few minutes after. She put the lid on it, went to carry it to the fridge and of course the plastic melted but the pressure also built up so it exploded not just leaked out. Very nasty scald burns over her body. AS she said it was a dumb thing to do, she just never stopped to think how long it really took to cool the water down.

Foodstr2: I looked on the web and found the gravity feed 200/400, is that the one your talking about. It makes since to filter the waterwe drink. I bought one down at the distribution center, it looks pretty flimsy. I have really had great luck with the 5 gallon mylar bags storage. I can only hope my wheat is ok, I bought and stored it in the Walton plastic bags they came in. We can only hope right!

For those who live in a desert climate.

There is a air to water converter generator. There are a few now around the globe are actually manufacturing these units.

25 years ago I started my food storage program. My wife and I went down to Salt Lake City and purchased 2000 pounds of wheat in 50lb bags. We bought several hundred pounds of beans, rice, lentals, milk in cans, potato buds, well you get the idea. I was ready for the big one, I was ready to board up the window with my gun sticking through a slot and repel all neighbors that had not prepared. My thinking has changed drastically. I can not watch anyone go hungry and sit on my food storage down in the basement with my gun at the ready. I truly think that if there comes a day when the sky is falling, those who have stored food will be asked to bring it to a central point and share it with others. I myself would be happy as a clam if they packed all that stuff up out of my basement. To finally answer your question, if marshal law is issued, federal, state, and even locally, they can confiscate anything you own.

Start small and store what you like and eat everyday, rotate that food. and store plenty of water. my choice is 5 gallon mylar bags in storage box, easy to stack and water tastes great after many years.

I agree. Obviously if Church or Civil authorities ask for it, I will give all I have to help others. If people ask for help I will give them all the help I can.

However, there is a big difference between sharing and giving help to others; and having someone come and take by force all I and my family have to live on. I'm willing to share and help all I can, but will resist with all I have the forceable stealing of our property.

One thing that my daughter reminded me, food storage is useless when a tsunami wipes out an area. Each location where a member lives is unique to natural disasters and requires preparation to meet is the common known natural problem. But I agree with Andrew, we need always to prepare but more so in having greater faith in GOD during those times when our own storage is wiped away.

That's also true when other disasters flatten your house, or you have a major flood hit, as that can cause mold growth, which would make one sick, or if it's like Katrina, the flood water could have raw sewage which would contaminate the food supply. I like to have stuff that lasts longer than 72 hours in a portable kit myself.

Is anyone anticipating a house to house search and the question "Are you Mormon? Where is your food storage?" I for one am not. If there is such a national emergency there will be no police force and military will be in disarray. Remember Katrina. Policemen all went home to take care of their own families.

Ben Raines

thats why there will be foreign troops policing our streets. i have an ex girlfrien who works at a munitions depot or factory in nevada and she says that there are literally thousands of foreign troops training there at any given time. trust me when i say that they will have no moral problems when it comes to keeping us in line.

Ok, I know this is a years old thread but I just can't help responding.

Ben Raines, I do remember Katrina. I remember the police, the National Guard, police from several other states, and government paid mercenaries all going door to door collecting constitutionally protected firearms and I remember videos of these government home invaders beating up an 80 year old woman who was trying to surrender her gun to them.

I remember a government very much willing to enforce any policy it wanted on Americans.

Same here.:D I can't help but respond to this thread because in spite of it being old, knowledge regarding emergency preparedness and food storage is still very important. In times of emergencies, there are two things you want to have. You want an additional supply of food to make sure you do not starve and a great credit rating in case you get a loan. You can build your credit with a no credit check payday loan. Then, you can use the extra cash to cover your food storage. Do it not, and things will be easier when hard times do come. Learn more at: No Credit Check Payday Loan.
