Dating (or not) in the age of the Internet.

If a boy and a girl meet on a Minecraft server to play together, is that considered a date? (Safe server, no swearing allowed, computer in a central area, child well-schooled on internet safety, etc.). It's sort of a tongue-in-cheek question, but I wanted opinions, anyway. :)

Are they physically together for this game, or are they "meeting" online to play? If they are physically together then it's an informal date. If they are only together online, then it's not. When we used to talk "for hours" on the phone with our gfs/bfs we didn't call that dating.

The beauty of this modern age is that parents and guardians can often call up the online script, and know exactly what the two lovebirds are saying to each other. Modern kids have no expectation of privacy--anything they say or do can be used against them in the Court of Youtube.

By their definition of a date, perhaps it is one. For some time now, video games have offered in game weddings or engagement rings for a price and some take advantage of that, informally or formally.

I spent over 8000 hours talking to my ...."ex", via MSN, Skype and the phone in four years time. Apparently her wanting to leave her mission to marry me wasn't serious enough to tell people, as I the man hadn't proposed.

Its a date withing modern contexts, but lets not forget hanging out is less risque.

i dont count on line dating as dating i agree when we talked on the phones we werent dating. Thou it is communication that can bring 2 people together. ive known people who met on line and got married in the temple it can work.....but u need time together in person 2 date. dating and old fashion courting is important. my neice found someone on line He lives in a different state he paid for her to visit him and hes visit her and they look so happy together it looks like hes moving down here so will see. I wish them both the best. I hope it works for them. I meet a guy on line we been dating he lives close by, but Im not sure it is going to work though he is a nice guy....

No, you cannot count it toward the "no proposing before the third date" rule.

Yeah, it would be really freaky to propose after years of online "dating", only to find out you're about to marry a 12-year-old boy using a 24-year-old female model's picture for his avatar...

Oh wait... didn't that already happen? Remember Manti Te'o?

Well, as many of you know, Dravin and I met online (this forum). We "dated" online for quite a while. We didn't begin to date exclusively though until after we had spent time together and doing "dating" things. However, the majority of our dating life was done online.

I think that as kids learn to interact online, that it crosses from just making friends/hanging out/playing games to actual dating when the conversations turn to such. I don't consider myself dating any of you (other than Dravin) but I "hang" out with you online. However, our conversations are not private and do not run towards the typical dating talk.

Yeah, that must be difficult, though, to begin to deal with this with your kids.

What?!?! It's a good thing my wife had never heard of that rule ....

I proposed on our "first date", granted it was day 3 of our "first date", but still .... it probly didn't even really count as a date either.

BTW, it's all good, a group of old college friends reunited for a week-long spring camp trip in Moab. Somehow we always found ourselves together, riding the 4-wheeler together (even rolled the 4-wheeler together), getting lost together, etc - all purely accidentally I assure you.

Funny thing, I never ever thought of her as the dating kind of girl in college, she was just one of the gang & great friend!

My neighbors, they met online. He was kind of embarrassed to tell people that, & since they actually grew up only about 15-miles from each other, it easy to cover with a little fib. They actually didn't meet until they were both in their 30s & then it had to be online, which is kind of funny since they grew up in the same area & are the same age.
