Commercials for kids

We don't have cable and usually watch tv that has little or no commercials. So today we went to my husband's relatives house for Thanksgiving. They had on some Disney channel. During one commercial break they had on one commercial for a puppet that burps and passes gas. The next one for a what I think was a game where you pull pretend snot out of a mans head. After that one was a toy dog where you feed it something (it was noisy so I didn't get all the details) and somehow it comes out the back end so the lucky child can pretend the dog pooped.

Yeah immature toys like that were around when I was a kid too.

There are far worse (and dangerous) toys that have existed, and toys like that usually force a kid to play with others not sit on a phone or xbox

I thought it was funny (and at the same time I was glad we don't have cable). What do you say when your child asks for all three of these things...and describes the wonderful joys and characteristics of each one? Oh, the joys of parenthood

Same thing you say when they ask for Barbies and GI Joes.

I'll tell you what my mother told me

"you have your own money, why are you asking me?!"

(I had a job starting at about 10, in the summer, got actual cheques and everything...)

My dad would just laugh.

There was no just asking for toys, nor were there lame chores, my parents thought of things, hard things.

We don't get those requests because they don't see the commercials. It is really nice. We are very conservative about our approach to money, anyways. We don't get bugged about buying many food products or kid restaurants from our kids. If we do, it is because they know they are yummy and not just because of a commercial. When I have been somewhere and they do have kid cable on I wonder why parents would let their kids watch something with so much commercialization. I'm too cheap and it would bug us if they kept on bugging us for the toys and didn't use their heads about it. Also, all that junk food? And parents complain their kids won't each veggies? Our kids do earn a commission (they have to earn the money) and we rarely buy them toys except for birthdays. Santa and the Easter Bunny buy them the other times of the year. I'm so much of a less is more mom. People do too much and put too many things in their lives. :)

You know, I begged for a trampoline. I never got one.

I never got the my size barbie. Just looked at it on toys r us. Creepy! Also always wanted an easy bake oven. One year for Christmas, though, we got this mad scientist make your own candy thing. Grossest candy ever! Maybe we could start a best/worst present received for Christmas thread.
