Dieter F. Uchtdorf - Saturday a.m. Session

Recommended Posts

Some asked me if I would speak in German.  I said no but it will sound like it.

In a very short period of time our understanding of the universe changed forever.

We know that the galaxies are there and have been there for a very long time.

The immensity of the universe didn’t suddenly change but our ability to see and  understand changed dramatically.

Imagine having a conversation with some of years ago.  Imagine trying to explain to them modern technology.

It seems to be a trait of humanity to assume we are right even when we are wrong.

Is it possible to find truth?

God has given us the promise that we can know truth for ourselves.

Those that approach him with a sincere heart and pure intent, God will speak to them.

There will be those that scoff and say such a thing is impossible that God has more things to do to answer each single prayer.

God does listen and he will answer prayers in His own way and in His own time.

We need to learn to listen to His voice.

God wants us to find our way back to Him and the Savior is the way.

You must search the word of God.  Meaning reading the scriptures of those ancient prophets as well as current.

Prepare your minds to receive the truth.

You must ask your Heavenly Father, in the name of His son Jesus Christ, to manifest the truth of the Church of Jesus Christ to you.

If any man will do God’s will he will know of the doctrine whether it be of God or whether I speak myself.

You must first live the gospel of Jesus Christ.

If you will do these things, you have a promise from God that he will manifest the truth to you by the power of the Holy Ghost.

If you want to recognize spiritual truth you must use the right instruments.

Gradually things that seemed hazy become clear, bright and familiar to us.

If we remove ourselves from the light of the gospel our own light begins to dim.

The church is a home for all to come together no matter the depth or the height of our testimony.

The church is not just for perfect people but it is for all to come unto Christ to become perfected in Him.

The church is a place of welcoming and nurturing.

The church is a place for uplifting each other.

We do not condemn others for the amount of light that others may or may not have.

“The process of gathering spiritual light is the quest of a lifetime.”

“If you do your part it will come and it will be glorious.”

“The Savior promised that if you seek, He will find.”

This spiritual light is within the reach of every child of God.

Do not delay the moment to seek and strengthen your own personal testimony of God’s divine work.

The German joke was a wonderful way to open the speech.

As a former Toastmaster with a lot of battle scars in public speaking, I can attest to one cardinal rule of public speaking: if your audience likes you, they will overlook the bad parts of your speech.  If they dislike you, they will see only the bad parts of your speech.

President Uchtdorf's humble self-ribbing made me like him even more, and I didn't think that was possible.  By the way, I was reading his biography and learned that the Church's temple in Frieberg, Germany (dedicated 1983) was the only LDS temple ever built in a communist nation (East Germany).

I loved this talk..

I did, too.  President Uchtdorf's recent talks were pretty much the catalyst that got me back on the road to being active in the Church again.  I really think I like him more than I like Judi Dench (and that's saying a lot).

And I think it's charming the way he pronounces the name of the Church as "the church of J-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-sus Christ of Lard-day Cents," although in recent talks he's been pronouncing it more carefully.  Whatever.  When he speaks, I listen.

Polar, I love the way he pronounces the name of the Church too. Everytime he speaks it makes me smile. I was hoping he would deliver one of his talks in German.

Ich auch.

The following link (an amusing video with President Uchtdorf's voiceover) may already have been publicized on lds.net, but I watch it all the time and it never fails to uplift me.
