SALT LAKE CITY —

Elder L. Tom Perry, member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is suffering from terminal cancer, it was reported Friday.  The Church announced last month that Elder Perry had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, but a spokesman said Friday that the cancer had spread.  Elder Perry is 92.

God bless him. I'm praying for him and his family. I hope I don't get in trouble for saying this, I know we aren't supposed to have "favorites" but I've always loved, loved, loved his talks. Taking nothing away from the other apostles, I love them too!

I am sorry to hear this of Elder Perry, beloved of the Church's membership. At 92, having almost completed his mortal tasks, it appears he is soon to be called to a much wider service among a much larger population.

 so well said my friend.

What's wrong with having favorites? Elder Wirthlin is my #1 and Elder Perry is my #2.

Sorry Pam! I was told once it's not a good idea to have favorites. My bad.

At the risk of taking too seriously a light comment made as an aside: I tend to agree that it's not wise to have favorites among the apostles. Obviously, there will always be one or a few with whom we simply feel more of a connection. For example, I always enjoyed Elder Maxwell's talks, and always found myself drawn to Elder Faust and Elder (later President) Hinckley. Yet I later found that Elder Scott, who had not been on my "favorites" list (unless I wanted to take a nap), provided the most inspiring and detailed instruction I had ever heard -- a humbling discovery, I assure you.

Today, I naturally gravitate toward a half dozen or so of the brethren serving in the Twelve, including e.g. Elder Oaks and Elder Christofferson (and, btw, Elder Scott). Yet when I concentrate on the sermons and teachings of the others in the Twelve, those whom I perhaps don't just naturally fall in line with when listening, I discover important gems that I need and gain insights that I otherwise would have missed. So from a purely selfish perspective, having "favorites" would limit me. While I will acknowledge that there are those whose words I more easily enjoy, I prefer to try to view each of the Twelve, and indeed each speaker I hear both at General Conference and at local meetings, as a conveyer of God's word to me.

Me too. I love the way he talks along in a measured tone, and then all of a sudden his voice will BOOM when he wants to emphasize a particular point.

Your right. We tend to gravitate to certain ones who speak while others put us to sleep...perhaps the best reason for reading the conference issues of The Ensign, black and white is a great equalizer.

And I also extend my prayers to both Elder Perry and his family, and the prophet as he ponders the Lord's will for the future of the quorum of the twelve apostles.

LOL, no you aren't supposed to have favorite children...but I've never heard you shouldn't have a favorite general authority.  My favorite is Elder Holland, and my second is Pres. Uchtdorf.

That was exactly his style! I love that about him!
