Curious Situation...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.  My name is Isaac; my introductory post from a few years ago on my old profile (link in my sig) tells my story.

I'm curious for a bit of input; I have just turned 31 years old, and thus I am technically too old for YSA, however, I am beginning my sophomore year of college, as in my depression and mental health issues, I feel as though I lost roughly 6 years of my life.  They feel as though they were a dream.  In essence, I feel like I'm only 25, despite my age being being a few years past that.

The last year in college has made me realize as well, that apart from being far more mature than I was, I still get along fantastically with other college aged students, and they have no clue that I am as much older than them as I am until I tell them, and they often don't believe it until I show them my drivers license.

Where I am going with all this is, and its just not something I am familiar with, is that I was wondering if the Church might allow someone in my position to attend the local universities YSA group?  Honestly, I could take the Institute courses, and be in class with other young members of the church.  At this point, I feel as though I need the support network of other young people and university classmates who are members of the church.

I realize much of this line of thought would be something that I would necessarily need to talk to the YSA Branch President about, but I merely was desiring a bit of input on the subject from you all first. Thanks in advance!

at a certain time young women transition from Laurels to Relief Society and young men transition from Priests quorum to the Elders Quorum.

Qoh.3

[1] To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
[2] A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
[3] A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
[4] A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
[5] A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
[6] A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
[7] A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
[8] A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

To have comfort in that where you are isn't growth. Growth comes in seeking to do well wherein you are placed despite your discomfort.

Talk to the Bishop of the YSA branch. I'm sure it'll be fine.

I agree about talking with the bishop. I would be surprised if it's fine with him, though. I'm sort of with Joe on this: It's time to move on.

YSA is 18 - 30?  And you're 31?  Heh.  I bet you'll gather comments ranging from "why would that be a problem" all the way to "ew gross - Peter Pan alert!  Shun him!"

From what I can gather, being single in the church stinks.  Because everyone has an opinion about you, and they're all different.

I can't advise you here, but I can say I identify a bit with you.  My wife is 7 years younger than me.  Good luck and happy maturing!

I have a friend in my YSA branch who is about 3 months from "phasing out" of the branch as he will be turning 31. He does a wonderful job in his calling as ward mission leader. He is active, he participates, and he's trying to assimilate and be part of the branch. He feels like he is going to be kicked out in October, but I don't feel as though he is going to be kicked out. Perhaps he will be, but our branch president is very understanding.

I think it will honestly depend on the makeup of your YSA branch. Our area is a drastic mix of young'ns (under 20) and oldies (over 25) without much inbetween. You would probably fit in nicely in my branch. But if your area is full of very young YSAs, I could see a branch president being much less inclined to include. If that makes sense.
