Floridagal
Morning all-Basically I would like to learn more about the early pioneers (before the handcarts). My (5g)grandfather and his family were Baptised early on in the church and helped build the first Temples and I would love to know more about that period in Mormon history. I don't mind if it is Non FIction or historical fiction-just basically would like to know more about my heritage in the church. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks! Just_A_Guy
For historical fiction, I don't think you can do better than Gerald Lund's The Work and the Glory series. For LDS history generally, I'm a fan of James Allen and Glen Leonard's Story of the Latter-Day Saints. The Church Institute publishes a manual called "Church History in the Fulness of Times" that is okay (online at https://www.lds.org/manual/church-history-in-the-fulness-of-times-student-manual?lang=eng), and there's a new manual called "Foundations of the Restoration" that looks promising (https://www.lds.org/manual/foundations-of-the-restoration-teacher-manual?lang=eng). Average Joe
The Church History In The Fulness Of Times Student Manual would be an inexpensive and authoritative place to start. Floridagal, Just_A_Guy and Str8Shooter
Palerider
I am not a good source ..... I have read and continue to read all kinds of church history books. I am reading one now about the life of Dr Frederick G Williams. I would start with the books suggested in the above posts. David13
I would try the libraries. I suspect they would have a shelf or half a shelf, or maybe two shelves of nothing but Mormon Pioneer history, including some older, now not available books that would give you an older point of view.dc Floridagal
Floridagal
Thanks for all the help!I ordered the first two of the 'Work and the Glory' series and also downloaded the Church history in the fullness of times...I'm sure I will get to all the recommendations eventually. Right now I am reading 'The God who Weeps' by Givens. Anyone have any opinions about that one? (I know it's not historical-just ran across it and it looked interesting.) rameumptom
The journals/writings of some of the early Church members is a good source. http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/ Floridagal and Just_A_Guy
