SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced its new presiding bishop Friday.

Bishop Gérald Caussé will serve as the new presiding bishop. Dean M. Davies and W. Christopher Waddell will serve as the first and second counselors respectively, according to the LDS Church.

Forgive me in advance, but what are their duties? How are they different from the seventies?

I'm a convert, so I ask in sheer ignorance, nothing else

The Seventies support the 12 in the mission to proclaim the gospel to all the World (in a way the more spiritual aspects of the church)

The Presiding Bishopric handles the buildings and finances etc... (in a way the more worldly but necessary aspects of the church)

Of course there is some overlap and the 12 preside over both

 Oh okay.

Thank you so much, I had no idea.

Bishop Caussé has a very impressive professional background which fits well with his role as Presiding Bishop.  Think "logistics" -- moving food and supplies from one place to another.

Bishop Caussé received a master’s degree in business from ESSEC in 1987. His career has been in the food industry, where he worked with several supermarket chains and food distribution companies. At the time of his call to the First Quorum of the Seventy, he was the general manager of Pomona, a food distribution company in France.

Specifically food logistics.  One of the primary functions of the Presiding Bishop is to oversee the welfare programs of the Church including the Bishop's Storehouse and welfare farms.
