  1. Thanks for your quick replies! Which model is the best? ( durable / best price point) Which bag sizes do you use the most? Mostly I expect to use them for freezer meats.
  2. I find that I am having trouble getting a good seal with my bag sealer on the LDS 7 mil bags, and would like to find some (1 gal) 5 mil bags. Trouble is, I can't find any. Help!
  3. Which is best? (most durable / economical) Where is the best place to buy and what are the most commonly used bag sizes? I am also interested in these as freezer storage. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

  5. Good helpful information folks. Thanks! Think I'll put the ziploced bags of absorbers in the mason jar until I find these strips :) You're all going to want these things when I do. Re-using the the original, thicker bags rocks.
  6. I've been getting my oxygen absorbers right from the LDS website and they are the best. However, I have yet to use the entire package at one time, and have to store the unused packets until needed. I have been putting them into a large mouth mason jar, but it seems that the potency gets reduced as I open the lid to take some out. (new oxygen rushes in) A while back I saw someone using this blue plastic "press to close" (like a zip lock bag closure) on the unused portion of the original O2 absorber bag to close the bag without having to take any more absorbers than needed. (from the original O2 bag) Anyone familiar with these closures? Where can I get some?

  8. My wife and I each have a USGI 3 day pack with 3L water bladders, water purifier bottle and tablets ready at all times. Each pack holds 3 MRE's (the real kind) , a small package of Boullion, Raman noodles, hard candy, gum, 3 - 5 Hour energy drinks, and 4 Hooah bars. HOOAH! 3 days of food to eat on the go. Of course, we pack USGI P-51 can openers (just in case we run across canned food) I keep additional food and a 6 gallon water container in the truck all the times.
  9. Update: I got a callback from the local cannery. The elder explained how cannery food stores were normally only available to church members, but he was sympathetic when I explained that I was a open and like minded christian with a family, and had spoken with the local bishop in my area. I can't say enough about how nice the couple running the cannery was, and how I was treated. I got a tour of the facility, (It was so clean you could literally eat off the floor) and I got to operate the canning machine. (It was soooo cool) By the end of the night I was a pickup trucks worth of food closer to my goal of a years supply. The prayer of thanks they said before I left was warm and heartfelt. I felt.......worthy.

  12. Thanks for your quick reply! Yes, I have a couple of 5 gallon tanks for my BBQ and keep about 10 quarts for the the emergency Coleman. But, having more propane inside the house (no garage, no shed) makes me nervous. I guess what I'm looking for is a long term alternative.

  14. This is my first post here. I know you'll have some thoughts on this to share. I well am on my way to family food storage, and one thing that concerns me is how I will cook if I lose my utilities for a longer than usual time. I live in S.Florida and already use a Coleman propane grill for short term emergencies like our annual hurricane seasons. Since I live near a park that I could probably scrounge up firewood if I need it, and would like to build a wood burning grill that could also have an oven out of concrete block or brick. Has anyone done this? Anyone know of a download-able set of plans? Does this make sense to anyone else? Also, where would I get the kind of grate I would need for something like this? Have one made out of re-bar?
